Privatization is a Scam,

but the Tide is Turning

Privatization is a scam. Slave masters always want to own everything. For centuries our ancestors built and paid for:

  • Power stations

  • Water works

  • Roads

  • Schools

  • Phone lines

  • Prisons

and we reaped the benefits. These are all wealth. They are our inheritance. We should all receive benefits from what our ancestors did for us. The government should own these things, and then share the profits with us, because the government is meant to be our representative and servant, not our master.  Especially, these businesses should be in the hands of as local a government as possible – county or state. It must be removed from the corporations, which belong to the oligarchs.

Wealth is much more than just money, which is a piece of paper. It’s things that add directly to improve survival, and these are the things that the oligarchs want to privatize, to because it makes them rich.

The oligarchs convinced us that they could do a better job with these systems if they ran them, so they took them off us. Once they had them, they could kept the profits, and charges us more and more money for services so that they got richer and richer, and we got poorer. That’s one reason why there is such massive wealth inequality these days.

Here’s an example of how corrupt Privatization is. Nestle wants your water:

Fortunately, people are waking up to the fact that privatization is a scam.

Privatisation isn’t working. We were promised a shareholding democracy, competition, falling costs and better services. A generation on, most people’s experience has been the opposite. From energy to water, rail to public services, the reality has been private monopolies, perverse subsidies, exorbitant prices, woeful under-investment, profiteering and corporate capture.

Private cartels run rings round the regulators. Consumers and politicians are bamboozled by commercial secrecy and contractual complexity. Workforces have their pay and conditions slashed. Control of essential services has not only passed to corporate giants based overseas, but those companies are themselves often state-owned – they’re just owned by another state.

Report after report has shown privatised services to be more expensive and inefficient than their publicly owned counterparts. It’s scarcely surprising that a large majority of the public, who have never supported a single privatisation, neither trust the privateers nor want them running their services.

Privatization must be ended. The public business that are essential for survival and have been privatized, must be returned to the government.
